Imagine Running a 5K Where Ben Hogan and Ben Crenshaw Played!

Lions Muny Golf Course to be the site of a uniquely Austin event staged by Run-Tex.

The inaugural “Run for the Green” 5K will be held Sunday, February 5, 2012 at historical Lions Municipal Golf Course.  The event starts at 8 AM and features a competitive run, followed by a fun run for kids 12 and under.  Runners will be routed through the course’s ancient oak tree stands, down fairways and around Muny’s water features, greens and bunkers.

The official starter for the race is Austin golfing legend Ben Crenshaw.  Crenshaw, who grew up and lives nearby, has been a vocal and visible supporter of Muny and still plays there often.

Lions Municipal Golf Course has been in operation since 1924 and is recognized by the Texas Historical Commission as the first golf course in the South to de-segregate.  Muny is an Austin icon and is in peril of being closed in 2019 and replaced with retail and apartment development, according to plans being considered by the University of Texas, the owner of the Brackenridge Tract where the course is located.

Participation cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children, 12 years old and younger. All runners will receive T-shirts and prizes will be rewarded.

• Huber will continue his work as a reporter/essayist for TNT’s 2010 golf coverage which will include coverage of the 92nf PGA Championship and the 2010 Grand Slam of Golf.

• An Emmy Award-winning essayist, Huber joined Turner Sports full-time in 2000, relinquishing his duties at CNN/Sports Illustrated. His expanded role as an announcer includes both the NBA and professional golf.

• He worked as an essayist and reporter on TNT’s coverage of the Williams World Challenge Presented by Target, and served in the same role for the 2000 PGA Grand Slam of Golf and the third Presidents Cup from the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Lake Manassas, VA.

• Previously, Huber hosted TBS Superstation’s 1998 PGA Grand Slam of Golf coverage in November from Poipu Bay Golf Course in Kauai, HI. In 2007 he served as a course reporter for the tournament’s inaugural year from The Mid Ocean Course in Bermuda.

• Huber served as an anchor and reporter for CNN/Sports Illustrated, the 24-hour sports news network from CNN and Sports Illustrated. In addition, he hosted CNN’s Pro Golf Weekly and Sporting Life with Jim Huber.

PERSONAL

• The veteran sports reporter won an Emmy® for his writing of an “Olympic Park Bombing” essay. He has won two Georgia Emmys, six Sportscaster of the Year awards from the Associated Press, five United Press International awards, a Unity Award in Media, two Sigma Delta Chi awards, a Gold award from both the New York and Houston Film Festivals and two CableACEs. While co-anchoring Sports Tonight with Nick Charles, the show was awarded two CableACE's for best sports information program.

• In June 2008 he was inducted into the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Hall of Fame for his excellence in sports journalism.

• He attended Presbyterian College in South Carolina and is the author of The Babes of Winter (1975, Strode Publishing).

• Wrote A Thousand Goodbyes in memory of his father, which was released in August (2001, Thomas Nelson Publishing).
